British Association for Vedic Astrology

History
The British Association for Vedic Astrology was founded on 16/12/1996 at 22.14 15 in Romsey, Hampshire. by Andrew Foss (President) and Komilla Sutton (Chair). Shortly after that, Gordon Brennan (Education) and Geoffrey Pearce (Treasurer) joined to form the first BAVA committee.

Branch of astrology
Vedic Astrology, or Jyotish is known as the science of light (Jyoti = light).  It uses the same basic astrological matters as tropical astrology, but it is sidereal, using the visible positions of the planets and stars.

Courses
The next online course for beginners will run from 13th September 2022 on Tuesday evenings for 12 weeks.  Tutors: Gordon Brennan and Andrew Foss.  The course is open to all. Course fee £150.

Courses for beginners are held each academic term and are advertised on the website or through the free monthly newsletter. All of the committee and many of the professional members teach their own courses as well. There are BAVA members in many countries around the world, so although based in the UK, BAVA has also become an international organisation.

Further Information
There are a lot of differences between tropical astrology and Vedic Astrology, which has hundreds of unique astrological techniques.  These are mostly recorded in Sanskrit, the ancient language of India.  Many old texts have been translated in the last century and hundreds of books in English and other languages are available on the subject. It is often thought that Vedic Astrology is a type of lunar astrology, but it is actually soli-lunar, as you can see from the ancient soli-lunar calendars or Panchangs, some of which are thousands of years old. The signs of the zodiac were referred to by the names of their deities or Adityas.  This is how astrological references to the signs of the zodiac appear in the Vedas, the most ancient scriptures in the world.
